Graduation is a great time to gift….money! Sometimes, when you can’t think of what to get a graduate, money is a totally appreciated option. They’re leaving high school or college (maybe middle school….but if this is a kindergarten graduation, don’t gift money. You can get away with gummy worms. I promise). Anyways, leaving either high school or college means this grad is going into the wide world of adult living and adult living comes with bills, so money is important! But, you don’t have to make gifting money boring. If you are looking for a unique graduation money gift idea, this is an easy DIY for you! Keep reading for the full tutorial.
What You’ll Need
Supplies for your DIY grad cap box are fairly simple. You’ll need:
- Black box
- Yellow embroidery floss
- Glue gun
- Gluesticks
- Any other decorative items you want to add (optional)
Putting Together Your Graduation Money Gift Idea: Grad Cap Gift Box
This is fairly simple. But let’s take it a step at a time. First up, let’s get our box created and ready. The initial step is to make our tassel. I used a yellow embroidery floss because it’s the classic color for a tassel in graduation imagery. But, this is an opportunity for you to be creative. If you want to, use the colors of your graduate’s school!
So, to make the tassel we are going to make a loop around our fingers and thread a single or double strand through one side of the loop. Then, tie around the top portion of the loop. Watch the video below for a visual demonstration. Then, cut your bottom part of the loop (opposite end of where you tied). Now you have a small tassel!
To attach to the box, you need to bust out the glue gun! I suppose you could use regular glue as well, but I feel like the glue gun provides more immediate results and works a little cleaner. Just put a small dot in the middle of the top of your box and affix the end of your tassel to it. It’s probably best if you try holding it at a few different lengths before you actually glue it. That way you’re happy with your results!
For the inside of the box, you can use a small amount of tissue paper at the bottom, or some crinkle paper. Then, lay in your money gift and top with the box topper! Finally, add any small details you’d like such as the grad’s initials, stickers or bling, logos or anything else!
