Remember the Skittles catchphrase, “Taste the Rainbow”? I took that literally with this DIY gift idea! It’s an easy gift box you can put together that revolves around food. I’ve got an easy step by step tutorial with tips about where to get all the goods. Read on for your easy and affordable DIY rainbow food box gift!
What You’ll Need
- A gift box
- a few different colors of filler paper
- individual sized snacks (different colored wrappers – think rainbow)
- ribbon (optional)
I got all of my materials at The Dollar Tree, except for the box. The box came from Michaels, but on sale for 50% off! The filler paper and snacks are from the dollar store. Check the snack aisle and get snacks that have different wrapper colors of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.
Pro tip: Don’t forget the size of your box. I had waaaaay too many snacks for my box. I jammed a bunch of them in there, though!
Putting Your DIY Rainbow Food Box Gift Together
Start by putting your crinkle paper in the box. It will be tempting to keep it light, but pack those paper crinkles in there! The food items that you’ll be adding will weigh it down and you want the food to be able to sit up a little, for a good presentation. So, lots of paper to start.
I made rows of each color. You don’t necessarily have to do every color of the rainbow, but a few different color helps reinforce your rainbow aesthetic. You can see how mine turned out in the picture below.
Next Steps….
So, now it’s time to fill this box with food! Starting left to right, add in your red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple wrapper foods. I ended up using just two or three items for each. Whatever I could really fit in the box. It’s ok, and actually better if you pack it tight. So, don’t be afraid to really go for it. Here’s what mine ended up looking like:
The box is most likely not going to close, FYI. It’s ok! Just prop the lid up and use it to stack your food against. It ends up having a gift basket look. But, they can use your fun box afterwards! Finally, top this gift off with a ribbon. This will keep it all together. If you prefer, you can use cellophane wrap for a more traditional look. But, I just found a super unique ribbon (in my craft stash – but I originally got it at Michale’s Crafts Store).
Work your bow at the top so that it looks right. And by looks right, I mean make sure it looks like the right size. You don’t want it huge or too small, because it will throw the proportions off. So, a few tries may be necessary, but you’ll end up with the perfect DIY rainbow food gift!
