To say that National Pig Day is my mom’s favorite day would be a great understatement. My mom LOVES pigs. To her credit, they are pretty darn cute. Clearly, we have to celebrate National Pig Day. And although National Pig Day is March 1st. I think I can make the argument to celebrate these awesome creatures year round. (My mom sure does). So, for your ultimate pig celebration I have three things: 1.) Pig Facts    2.) Hall of Fame Pigs   3.) Free Download. Let’s get going…..

Celebrating Pigs

How can we easily celebrate pigs? I’ve rounded up a couple super simple ideas:

1. Play Pass the Pigs – Classic game of throwing little pigs and gaining points based on how they land. It’s like a version of Yahtzee.

2. Watch your favorite pig! Pick one from the Pig Hall of Fame – Miss Piggy? Babe? Porky Pig?

3. Download the Pig Hall of Fame at the end of this post and use it for crafts, or print two copies and play a matching game like memory.

Pig Facts

  • Pigs are clean! For real! They roll in mud to cool down. But if they have an enclosure or shade, they actually stay clean.
  • Male pigs are boars, female pigs are sows. Piglets is a name for baby pigs that are still taking advantage of mom pig’s milk. After they ween off, they are called shoats. (Ok, I’m not at all up on my farm terms. I have literally never heard the word shoat. Fascinating!)
  • Pigs can weigh between 300-700 pounds. For perspective, a piano weighs about 500 pounds.
  • Pigs have bad eyesight, but great sense of smell
  • Pigs are smarter than dogs. Seriously, they learn their name by two weeks old! Sorry puppies.
  • Pigs like to snuggle. COME ON.
  • They represent fortune, honesty, happiness and virility
  • Adult pigs run up to 11 miles per hour. FYI that’s a mile time of less than 6 minutes. Never in my lifetime have I been that fast.
