The Boost Your Creativity Challenge is a way to celebrate the holiday “Inspire Your Heart with Art”. This official weird holiday is January 31st. In honor of celebrating all things, great or small, which is what the EventOTB blog is about, I created a fun little challenge. Oh, and it’s FREE. No $$ involved at all. Let’s have fun! Sign up here.
But Lauren, Why?
Why boost your creativity, you might ask. Well you don’t have to be an artist or a writer to want to work on increasing your creative mindset. There are so many benefits for increasing creativity. Here are some reasons:
- Increases your problem solving ability
- Building self confidence
- Helps you adapt to change easier
- Boosts collaboration for teams (you get new perspectives)
- Freedom of self expression (healing, coping, self actualization)
- Reduces stress! (We all need this!)
Just to name a few! If you boost your creativity, it will make you a more confident person, more efficient coworker, better leader, and more!
Who is this Challenge For?
This challenge is for everyone! The activities are quick (about 10-20 minutes to complete) and come one at a time over ten days. I don’t want anyone overwhelmed; we are REDUCING stress here. 🙂
The exercises are simple and fun. Ok, let’s go back to activities, exercises sounds so extreme. No jumping jacks people, I promise! (Although exercise is a great way to turn your brain on. I digress). The ACTIVITIES don’t require any special materials other than stuff you have laying around at home.
So, that being said, the challenge is great for all ages, and all types of professions – from stay at home moms, to teachers to corporate executives. Everyone can stand to gain a little insight into problem solving, while boosting confidence and self expression at the same time!
Boost Your Creativity Challenge: What am I Getting Into?
Here’s a little educational tidbit. (I see you teachers. RE: Mom). Edward de Bono is the father of Lateral Thinking. He literally founded the idea that there are two ways to think: vertical and lateral. Vertical (or linear) is how most of us think all day. It’s a logical progression from one move to another. Lateral thinking is a way of thinking that purposefully disrupts traditional thinking to arrive at a solution from another angle.
Ok, enough of school time. I just wanted to provide some of the inspiration and background for this challenge. This long lead in is coming to a quote from Mr. de Bono:
Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.

Give Me An Example, Please
So, that’s what the activities are based around, looking at things in a unique way and challenging the way you think! In case you want a quick preview, here is an example. This activity is not in the challenge, so no repeats:
This activity deals with typography. Typography is “the style and appearance of printed matter” according to the dictionary. So grab a pen, pencil, crayons, whatever medium you like and a piece of paper.
Tip: There is no right or wrong way to do this and you do not have to be a perfect artist.
Directions: Take the following words and create typography based on how you perceive or feel the word:
- Happy
- Sad
- Lazy
- Loud
- Energy
Try to do it on your own first, so you don’t influence your own creativity. And it does not have to be a complicated drawing! Think conceptually. But if you want to see some examples, you can see them here. And then try again!
Challenge, Level 2: Do three variations of each word!
